Community Activities
In Kent Youth's quest to provide increased services to the community, a grant was obtained in 2010 from the Local Management Board to start an ADVENTURE DIVERSION PROGRAM.
This program is an alternative intervention program for juveniles who have violated probation and are at risk for out-of-home placement. ADP is a mandatory supervised evening and weekend program that provides experiential learning, conflict resolution and pro-social skill development, blended with outdoor recreation activities.
It is a collaborative effort between Kent Youth, Inc., the Kent County Department of Juvenile Services, and the Kent County Local Management Board.
The goals of ADP are to reduce the number of out-of-home placements for this vulnerable group of juveniles and to provide positive events in youths lives to help them grow as individuals, work as a team, develop leadership skills and learn an appreciation for the outdoors.
Examples of activities the participants engage in include kayaking on the Chester River, Introduction to Fishing (equipment and basic skills), Animal Discovers at Chesapeake Farms, Leave No Trace (understanding the importance of minimal impact), Hiking at Eastern Neck Island, team building activities, The National Aquarium in Baltimore, Introduction to Climbing, activities at Echo Hill and rock climbing. Participants also volunteer their time at the Kent County Humane Society.
In 2011 the Governor's Office of Children approved the inclusion in the ADP of Kent Youth residents who have achieved an upper level of progress in our residential program.
Training and consultation for the staff of the new program was provided by individuals from the highly successful Carroll County ADP program and our staff have attended a Boys Circle training program as a requirement of the grant.
